Olympic Park To Be Named After The Queen

0710_olympics.png Much like her great-great-grandmother Victoria, Queen Elizabeth is to lend her name to a swathe of east London parkland: the Olympic Park in Stratford is to be renamed the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park after the Games have concluded, though we reckon locals will know it as Elizabeth or Lizzy Park.

The announcement came as the Olympic Park Legacy Committee unveiled its new plans
, which have changed substantially from the original design. Where residential blocks predominated, the new scheme is inspired by London's traditional John Nash-built terraced houses and garden squares. The 500-acre site will have around 8,000 homes in mostly low-rise developments, a reduction from the originally proposed 10,000, with more space now afforded to gardens and other green areas.

Thanks! I'll do a full review very soon. You are so right about Endless Circles.

Call me a royalist, but I quite like this idea. Nice to keep up a tradition - it's not just Victoria Park, but Regent's Park, assorted George V playing fields and parks, and the Edward VII memorial park in Limehouse. Besides, I'm struggling to think of anything other than a grim conference centre currently named after our Liz.

Slightly better than...

"The CocaCola-Acer-Tata-McDonalds-BMW-Samsung-GlaxoSmithKline-BP-Holiday Inn-EDF-John Lewis-BT-Next-Ticketmaster Olympic Park"

...I suppose.

That's what it's being called during the Games isn't it?

QEOP is a bit of a mouthful, hopefully this will become 'Elizabeth' or 'Lizzy Park' quickly enough.

Will it have proper royal park status?

I'd like to see the masterplan before I comment but the legacy company have used a free dropbox.com account to post it, and I guess they used there transfer limit - cheapskates.

hopefully the QEII bit will be dropped pretty quickly and it becomes just the Olympic Park
