You have to respect the NSPCC for their singularly creative fund-raising campaigns. Not content with a race up the Gherkin tower next spring, the children's charity are also organising a high-profile game of conkers. Now in its 7th year, the City Conker Cup Challenge will see teams of besuited banking types and other City workers ferociously thwacking each other's nuts in the hope of winning a trip to Prague. Teams from Harlequins, Saracens, London Wasps and London Irish rugby clubs will also be present, along with a commentary team from Radio 5 Live. The carnage takes place at the cavernous Loose Cannon Club on 7 October. Tickets cost £180 per team, which includes food, drink, entertainment and the knowledge that you're helping disadvantaged and endangered children.
