Late openings at museums are nothing new, but this Friday's extravaganza (24 September) at the NHM promises a diplodocus-sized helping of entertainment and enlightenment. The adults-only event will involve more talks, tours and demonstrations than you could shake an early hominid thigh bone at, with several bars providing wine with your deep time. NHM scientists will also be on hand to discuss the valuable work done in the museum's labs, and an Antiques-Roadshow-style section will help visitors identify unusual plants and animals found in the garden (bring along photos or specimens). After Hours: Science Uncovered runs from 4pm to 10pm this Friday, and entrance is free.
