Film Preview: Star Trek Weekender

1508_startrek.jpg Is it still embarrassing to like Star Trek? J.J. Abrams' "reboot" of the franchise last year dispatched Shatner, et al to the cosmic hinterland and put in their place a smattering of fresh-faced youths and action sequences borrowed from the Bourne playbook. The result? A critically-acclaimed film that was also a box-office smash.

But despite the brash new direction there's still a place in the heart for the old crew, and this August bank holiday fans will have ample opportunity to show their devotion at the Prince Charles Cinema's Star Trek Weekender, where they'll be showing all 11 films over three days. The season begins on Friday August 27th, with 1979's The Motion Picture, then rattles through the Kirk years and boldly goes into the mostly lacklustre (First Contact aside) Next Generation installments, before heading back to the future and ending with the aforementioned 2009 refresh on Sunday evening.

Tickets are £6.50 (£4 members) for individual films, or those with buttocks as tough as a Klingon's forehead can buy a season pass for £49 (£35 members) and see them all. No prizes or discounts for showing up in costume, but that's never stopped your average Trekkie before.
