TripAdvisor - Thumbs Down, Tony Awards - Thumbs Up

Tony.jpg We learned yesterday that London was not included in TripAdvisor's top 25 best locations to visit on Earth. It also did not appear in the top 25 European tourist destinations, did not rank high in the top UK destinations and, woe, only scored high as best European city for nightlife. After sobbing into our 2012 Olympics-themed pillows all night (oh, won't anyone think of the Olympics!), we're feeling brighter at the news that our nightlife is not only top in Europe but our theatre is storming across the pond to scoop 28 nominations at the Tony Awards.

The Tony Awards, formally the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards (named after theatre actress and philanthropist Antoinette Perry) are in their 63rd year. The 28 UK transfers up for awards include London transfers from Menier Chocolate Factory productions (La Cage Aux Folles, A Little Night Music) and Donmar Warehouse (Red, Hamlet). The Donmar productions have nine nominations between them, including Best Play, Best Leading Actor and Best Director, so we're hopeful for a good haul of awards.

The awards take place in Radio City Hall on 13 June - good luck to all our nominees and yah boo to TripAdvisor's survey. London may not rank well in its lists but it's always going to be the place for theatre. Nothing can top the kudos of saying "I saw [that top Tony Award-winning show] when it first opened in London." Just be sure, dear readers, to actually see the shows here, first.
