Just in time for a World Cup tie-in, sleb SA chef Barry Vera has announced the June opening of a new “theatre of food” in Camden. Dubbed Shaka Zulu and with the blessings of HRM King Goodwill Zwelethini, ruler of the Zulu nation, Vera's new 750 seat venture is to be the world's largest South African venue.

Londonist was on hand this morning for a sample session with Mr Vera. We tried a bit of ostrich, kudu and springbok - all grilled on open flame and to the sounds of tribal drumming. We found the springbok to be especially tender and tasty. Suggestive of the type of razzle dazzle folks might expect from this newbie eatery, Vera received a ceremonial splash of blood (with a bit of ketchup added for a more visual effect) for good luck from South African community leader and artist, Zweli-B.

In addition to slabs of exotic meat, seafood and traditional recipes such as “Zulu cabbage” and amazi, the mega-restaurant will feature live music and theatre-style floor shows. If the carbon footprint and air miles accumulated don't turn you off, and you hanker for a bit of Zulu woo hoo with your meal, keep this place in mind for feasting.

Shaka Zulu will be located at Stables Market in Camden, just below Gilgamesh restaurant. Visit www.shaka-zulu.com for more info.
