This month we thought we'd give you an excuse to talk about something other than the general election results by highlighting some of the wine-related events happening in the capital this May. Whether you want to learn more about a region's produce, explore food & wine pairings or just have a boozy night out for charity, there are plenty of opportunities to compare vintages other than those produced by chateaux rouge, bleu et jaune..

TONIGHT: Get down to the London Fairtrade Festival for 6.30pm this evening to find out about which wines go well with Divine Chocolate. Potters Field (South Bank) SE1 2AA.

12th May: Chilean Wine Tasting, Artisan and Vine. Part of their regular Wednesday workshop series, the team at this Battersea venue will be leading guests through an interesting selection of 5-6 Chilean wines with an accompaniment of matched canapés. Tickets £20. 126 St John's Hill, Clapham, SE11 1SL.

14th May: 'Call My Bluff With Wine' in aid of the Red Cross. This unusual evening events sees teams of people tasting wines and trying to guess which critic is offering the correct description for each one. People can either bring their own teams or be paired up on the night and will also get to sample English cheeses, breads and fruit as well as participate in a charity auction. Tickets are £45 from here or 020 7382 4650. Event takes place between 6.30-10.30pm at the Glaziers Hall, SE1.

15th May: Decanter Italian Fine Wine event at the Landmark Hotel. Join the popular magazine for a day of masterclasses, samplings and opportunities to meet Italian winemakers at the prestigious Marylebone hotel. Tickets start from £40 and are available here. NW1 6JQ

17th May: Uruguayan Wine Tasting, Canning House. A rare chance to sample some Uruguayan wines and meet representatives from the wineries. The evening is in aid of the Uruguayan society and tickets (which include canapés) are just 15. Buy before 10th May to ensure a place. 6.30pm, Canning House, 2 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8PJ

18th-20th May: London International Wine Fair 2010, ExCel London . Not a public event but an opportunity for restaurateurs, wholesalers, critics and the like to sample wines and network like there's no tomorrow. Look out for reports from the event if you're interested in knowing what London will be drinking in the next 12 months.

24th May: 'Cabernet Sauvignon From All Over The World' at Vivat Bacchus. This popular bar's wine club takes an evening to explore the uses of 'the most important red grape' and is tasting examples from all over the world in order to highlight the effects of region and temperature. Tickets are £15 for the Farringdon-based event and full information, as well as details of other events, can be found on their website.

26th May: Sherry and Tapas Tasting, The West London Wine School. Fortified wine novices and enthusiasts can taste a range of 8 sherries and examine their compatibility with a wide range of tapas dishes. Tickets £30. W4 5SE

This is just a selection of the wine events that are happening around the capital this month. If there are any others you think we should know about, please notify us in the comments below. Happy sampling!
