Prior to arriving at the Putney based Cakes 4 Fun on Tuesday morning for an Easter Cookie course, we wondered if there could possibly be anything more fun than spending an entire day decorating cookies. We have since come to the conclusion that there is not.

Students, who ranged from complete amateurs to those with a fair amount of experience, started off the class getting familiar with the cookie dough by learning when it had reached the appropriate thickness and consistency. Then the (at times messy) experiment with royal icing and piping began.

After a series of chicks and eggs had been glitterized, polka dotted, and striped, we moved on to sugar and flour paste. To our surprise and delight, we discovered that adding bows and flower blossoms to cookies and cakes was no where near as difficult as we had believed. By the end of the day, everyone was able to take home a large box of colourful and happy cookies, ready to be eaten or put on display for envious family members and friends.

Aside from the fun of eating any mistakes and occasionally getting covered in orange icing, this course is an excellent option for any aspiring baker. If your previous training consists of you noticing your end result looking nothing like the picture in the cookbook, or your mum yelling at you to clean up your mess, there is nothing like having a pro tell you how to properly roll your dough or how to best hold your piping paper. All equipment and ingredients are supplied and, best of all, students don't have to worry about washing up after themselves.

Although it's too late to sign up for an Easter themed course, Cakes 4 Fun offers other courses ranging from cookie, to cupcake, to cake decorating throughout the year. Courses typically last from 10am-4pm and cost £99. For more information, visit their website.
