Yorkshire Pudding Day, National Chip Week, Pancake Day? Ugh. And now we hear that this week is British Pie Week. What's with all these Stuff Your Face with Starches Days? How about a full year of National Leave us Alone and Let us Eat What We Want When We Want celebrations and promotions? Anyway, with that now off our editorial chests, we've nothing against eating pies.

Not sure if there's any real imperative to go this week but we're happy to recommend M Manzes and F Cooke for proper pies (and, of course, mash). Clark's Pie & Mash shop at Exmouth Market offers worthwhile (and dirt cheap) eats as well. And while we're filling the crust with all these ideas, we might as well make note of The Gun in Docklands and The Avalon in Clapham. Both pubs will be offering a Pie and a Pint for £10 this week, with intriguing combos such as Cow Pie (oxtail, ox tongue and tripe) with Timothy Taylor's Landlord; wild boar and chocolate with Wandle Ale; and London Pie (mince and potato with a tomato “chessboard” top) with a pint of London Pride.

Hmmm … is there room (and demand) for a “best pie and mash” series on Londonist?
