Yesterday morning, friends, family and supporters of Jean Charles de Menezes gathered outside Stockwell Tube to mark what would have been the Brazilian's 32nd birthday and to unveil a new memorial. The colourful mosaic by local artist Mary Edwards records the fatal shooting of de Menezes by the Metropolitan Police in the wake of the terrorist incidents of July 2005. Although a temporary shrine and mural quickly appeared outside the station, it has taken four and a half years to get permission for a permanent memorial. Jason Cobb has put together an excellent account of the unveiling, including audio clips and photos (we've cropped one here).
