Week Around the Ists

Londonist is one of thirteen in the worldwide Gothamist network. Once a week, the editors of each site - from SFist to Shanghaiist - compile some of their most interesting posts into a neat digest. Check out what's been going on elsewhere in the ist-a-verse:

  • Gothamist watched the State Senate reject gay marraige legislation supported by the Governor and State Assembly. The small silver lining was State Senator Diane Savino's impassioned speech — "We have nothing to fear from love and commitment."
  • Londonist reported on a nude cyclist terrorising the city, and urged readers to create their own tartans for London. Perhaps the latter could dress the former.
  • DCist was ecstatic to watch the D.C. Council make a historic, 11-2 vote in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage in the District of Columbia, but was heartbroken to learn that the National Zoo's young panda, Tai Shan, will soon be deported to China.
  • Chicagoist discovered the fun one local politician — State Rep. John Fritchey — was having with his Facebook page and social media in general.
  • Seattlest followed the manhunt that ensued after a convicted felon (who had been pardoned by 2012 presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee when Huckabee was governor of Arkansas) shot and killed four police officers.
  • Torontoist found it somewhat conspicuous when billboard companies, protesting a pending tax on billboards—some of the money from which will go towards increased enforcement of the city's sign bylaw—protested the tax by means of illegal billboards.
  • Shanghaiist tried to set Daniel Gross of Slate straight when he said he couldn't find chocolate in China. Unfortunately, it seems our advice fell on deaf ears.
  • Bostonist rounded up Christmas shopping options, which we hope will include special mittens for polydactyl kittens.
  • LAist heard it through the web-vine that a group of cyclists taking part in a Critical Mass ride were tackled and knocked off their bikes by 2 LAPD officers.
  • SFist cheered when Google and Gov. Schwarzenegger unveiled a tool to help battle climate change, but jeered after reading a hit piece on pit bulls.
  • Phillyist got a lesson on the inappropriate from author Daniel Nester.
