One of our favourite musical discoveries last year was the very brilliant future funk of Janelle Monae. Signed to Atlantic Records over here, we were promised that she'd be releasing music in early 2009. As is often the case in the music world that release date got pushed further and further back and 'early 2010' is now the plan. A protegee of Outkast, you can expect that same fun, futuristic soul sound that Big Boi and Andre 3000 captured so well in their last albums coupled with a fiercely individual sense of style. If you like the sound of someone whose debut EP was all about the life on a cyborg named Cindi Mayweather in the year 2719, then Cargo on November 4 is the place to be as it hosts Janelle's very first UK date and from reviews we've read of her American shows you can expect a daring and energetic performance that sometimes sees Janelle paint a picture while performing. Random, but if reviews are to be believed, very brilliant.

Her appearance is part of a fundraising night called All The Rage and will also feature performances from New York rapper Rich Hill and DJs Rashida and Nikki Beatnik. All proceeds from the gig will be Resources For Autism, simply buy on the door on the night.

Janelle Monae plays Cargo on November 4.
