New Spurs Stadium Aimed For 2012 Completion

Tottenham have submitted a planning application with Haringey council for their swank new stadium, and have released some more concept pictures of the design.

The project is costed at a rumoured £400 million, much like Arsenal's Emirates stadium, and in a further similarity is situated adjacent to their existing ground of White hart Lane. Perhaps wary of further comparisons with the home of their direct rivals, Spurs are citing a different inspiration: Anfield. The 56,000-seater stadium features a 63-row single tier stand, much like The Kop, and the design allows fans to be much closer to the pitch tan in other modern stadia; the club boast it would be the "most atmospheric stadium in Europe". They're hoping to move into the stadium by 2012, and harbour hopes of getting the ground included in England's World Cup 2018 bid.

As part of what's currently known as the Northumberland Development Project (the stadium's name will eventually be supplied by a sponsor), the complex will also house 434 homes and a 150-room hotel. Oh, and a supermarket, which to the less generous imagination sounds less like Anfield and more like the infamous 'Sainsbury's end' at Selhurst Park.

In advance of this weekend's north London derby, Harry Redknapp has already been delving into his book of Mind Games 101, saying that he "loves to watch Arsenal play" and praising the club's aesthetic style. If Tottenham's new ground comes to fruition, it could be the platform that lifts them up to the Gooners level.
