Dance Preview: Insane In The Brain

Bounce_Insane-in-the-Brain.jpg Yes, it's a hip hop version of Ken Kesey's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest but bear with us.

Here the steely Nurse Ratched attempts to impose the rigid discipline of classical ballet on her 'mental' patients whose rebellion takes the form of an explosion of street dance, led by the maverick, McMurphy. The crazy shapes, wild abandon and addictive beats of hip hop seem perfect to encapsulate the repressed energies of the subordinated inmates and the video trailer here looks awesome.

The soundtrack stacks up with Missy Elliot, Dizzie Rascal, Gotan Project, David Holmes and - naturally - Cypress Hill, with a multi-media presentation including bungee ropes. Performed 153 times already, the hip hop spin clearly resonates with audiences. We know we'll come out of it feeling old and creaky but seriously, we can't wait.

Is this crazy enough for ya'? There'll be no shitting on the floor please. Book now.

Insane in the Brain is at the Peacock Theatre from 15 September to 3 October. Tickets £10-36. Book online. Image by Hakan Lårsson
