Northern Line May Close At 10pm On Week Nights

The 'misery line', somewhat rehabilitated of late, could take a turn for the worse if the Evening Standard are to be believed. According to reports, Tube Lines have asked TfL for permission to close parts of the line from 10pm on weekdays in order to install new signalling equipment. This comes just a day after the private contractor was lambasted by the Mayor for their inability to keep to schedule on the Jubilee Line upgrades. Tube Lines say that any early closures would not affect the central portions of the line, which service popular night time spots such as Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.

Just checking you're all awake. But I'll let the error stand, as it's only a five minute walk.

Isn't keeping the central bits open and closing the outter bits the worst possible option? You can easily find alternative routes in Central London but if you live at either end of the line, you do need that line...

Can see your point, but the people in the centre are more likely to be confused tourists. In the outer reaches, people are more likely to be local and know where they're going, and can therefore seek alternative routes (e.g. buses). Plus, the central network is way more busy. If you close one line off, the other lines may become overcrowded.

upshot: it's a bad idea, whichever way you look at it :)

After 10pm on weekdays, surely it's Londoners trying to get home who'd be most inconvenienced, not tourists in the centre of town.
