Driverless Pods Carry Us Closer to Distant Future

flying car3.jpg Alongside a new terminal, Heathrow will soon be installing an energy-efficient Personal Rapid Transit System (PRT) between Terminal 5 and its business car park. Driverless pods, which will feature destination touch screens and be able to move along at up to 25 mph and carry 4 passengers, should make an appearance by 2010. The battery-powered PRT, developed by Bristol-based firm Advanced Transport Systems, will not only help to reduce queues and local emissions, but also should help fulfill our decades-old-vision of what the future should look like. The vehicles are currently on display at the Science Museum. Stop by for a free 10 minute demonstration this afternoon or tomorrow. (Image/marcus_jb1973)
