For England in Spite of St. George

1306.kew.jpg Calling all greenies! A fun new eco-squat has just been set up on 'derelict land' by Kew Bridge. The plot actually belongs to St. George (who have had their building plans to date turned down by the council) although the squatters stress that they haven't deliberately targeted the Goliath development company. Instead they claim affinity with Winstanley's DIggers, that stalwart bunch of 17th century agrarian idealists. Thus:

restraining of the earth from brethren by brethren is oppression and bondage; but the free enjoyment thereof is true freedom

Hmm. Where will it all lead? Well, at the moment it is leading to an open day next Saturday: the new residents are inviting anyone who's interested to pop along and see what they're up to. They've already done a load of planting and erected shelters. We'll try to get along with our cameras. And we really have to doff our cloth caps to them. (Image/McTumshie.)
