Santa made a rather unusual appearance in London today: outside the Zimbabwean Embassy in the Strand. Closer inspection revealed him to be a rather unpleasant doppelganger, Father Cholera, wearing a grotesque Mugabe face mask. This Father Nick doled out gifts alright - but they bore labels such as death, disease, rape and starvation. Lest we forget. The stunt was part of a six year long protest over the, um, less-than-popular Mugabe regime, and designed to draw attention to the current humanitarian crisis in the country. The Zimbabwe Vigil has been held every Saturday afternoon since 2002, and the organisers vow to fight on until such time as fair elections have taken place in their homeland.
We’ll try and bring you some photos tomorrow.
