We hate hate crimes at the best of times.

This last Tuesday, 28-year old David Cooper drank with friends in several of our favourite haunts on Old Compton Street, in Soho. He finished off with a drink in the Friendly Society at about 11pm. He then - somehow - travelled home, to Woolwich.

He was discovered at home the next day, murdered after a vicious assault and with serious head injuries. The police suspect this is a homophobic crime.

If you were in Soho on Tuesday night and recognise him, or perhaps you saw him on a bus, the tube or getting out of a cab in Woolwich - give the incident room a call on 020 8721 4868 (to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers is 0800 555111). The LGBT officer for Greenwich is on 020 8284 9864.

At a time when Martina Navratilova is helping change attitudes by talking about 'coming out' on one of the highest-rated mainstream TV shows, this demonstrates we still have a long way to go.
