Boris To Abolish Western Congestion Charge

Dave Hill has broken the story that the Western Congestion Charge will be abolished in 2010, once all the legal requirements have been suitably dealt with. The Mayor has since issued a press release stating that they received 28,000 responses and 67 per cent of individual respondents and 86 per cent of businesses wanted it to go. London Labour have responded criticising the loss of £70m in revenue and the impact on traffic and air pollution in the zone.

But not, apparently, the increase in traffic. Congestion Charge? Nope. The LineOurPockets Charge.

If you want to reduce traffic in London you need to:

1. Make public transport cheap, reliable, clean and safe
2. Ban large trucks for anything other than deliveries. Ideally, you'd make this ALL large trucks.
3. Enforce - I mean really *enforce* - the MOT rules on pollution. Especially busses.
4. Charge any private car £50 for the pleasure of prime time navigation. (Obvious exclusions apply, obv.]
5. Refloat the Cutty Sark and use it as a river taxi
6. Implement a muffin firing tank-only rule on Oxford Street.
7. More custard.
8. Nail Gordon Brown to the front of the DUKW Tourist Boat and take him for a little ride...

and... breathe....
