The Lord Mayor of London got his white wellies on today to present a rather handsome looking salmon to a similarly clad Mayor of Tower Hamlets in a ceremony at Billingsgate. The fish is paid annually in peppercorn rent to the East London borough, as the market was effectively foisted on it by the City of London when Billingsgate outgrew its old site on Lower Thames Street. The salmon, together with a crate of assorted seafood, will this year be presented to the Griffin Community Trust. This is a quaint tradition going back all of, let us see, 26 years (to 1982).
Don’t ya just love London?
