It's definitely time to think about how you want to spend the 14 February. Whether you're a sap for all things commercially romantic or a stalwart anti Valentine, it's important to know where you're going to be and what's going to be going on. No good staying in and ignoring the event if your flatmate's getting all hearts and flowers with their current kissing partner and no point trying to go out for dinner without a reservation unless the object of your desire gets off on Burger King fare.

We're taking it for granted that if you're into the VD thing then your romantic night is planned, booked and ready to roll. If, however, you're looking for an alternative then here are 2 quirky options that beat joining the Hallmark throng with a big pointy stick.

1. The wonderful Wellcome Trust is having a Valentine's Mashup involving access to the excellent Sleeping and Dreaming exhibition, a tour of it led by the curator and a talk all about bedrooms. There will also be live performances, special offers in the bookshop and yummy treats in the funky cafe. This event is free, although you need to get in quick and book your place.

2. The South East London Folklore Society monthly meet falls on VD this year so they're doing an excellently anti-event walk which starts at Bleeding Heart Yard, EC1 and ends up in the grimly named Crossbones Graveyard in SE1. It's a paltry £2.50 and you get treats and a copy of One Eye Grey thrown in (that Mr Roberts gets everywhere).

However you spend Valentine's night, remember Londonist loves you.
