The Sun Inn feels anything but sunny with its dark wooden, carpeted interior and foliage-heavy front garden, but it's certainly a charmer. It's a pub of two halves, with the cosy front bar and an extensive back room — all of it bedecked in rugby-themed images, posters and memorabilia.

Visit on a weekday afternoon and you'll find a sleepy, relaxing place. Catch it during a big rugby game and you'll get a very different experience. This is one of London's famous rugby pubs, across the road from Richmond Rugby club and a short bus ride to Twickenham. Consequently, the place is paced on match days.

Visit in quieter times and you can admire a very handsome old pub. A curvaceous bar is supported by columns that look like oversized chess pieces. The only natural light in the front filters in through stained glass windows showing the rising sun. Otherwise, head to the back room where skylights bring in more of that elusive sun, or squeeze into the narrow beer garden for the real thing.

As a Fuller's pub, the beer range is predictable, and the food is hearty.
