Durell Arms

Durell Arms

This pub was chosen for inclusion by the Londonist editorial team.

Look, we know it's spelt totally differently, but the name of this Victorian corner pub always makes us think of Superman and 'the son of Durell'. That's just the way our mind works. No capes of kryptonite in here, but it the Durell something of a super-pub, catering for all-comers.

The bright, airy front room is mostly given over to diners. The thin section adjacent to the bar offers a spot of booth-lounging. And then there's the massive back room, dubbed 'the Great Hall', all geared up for communal sports watching or live music. A small outdoor space on Fulham Road completes the picture.

The bar offers three or four ales and the usual sports lagers, leaning towards Truman's. A generous wine list and a well-priced cocktail selection both deserve exploration. Food is playful, with the pub encouraging customers to submit their own recipes for the chefs to try. Sunday roasts are brought out in joints for carving and sharing. We wonder how the Greggs bakery opposite gets any trade at all.

It's a friendly place. Hand-scrawled notes on the wall offer phone recharging behind the bar, and a five-day weather forecast from a member of staff, whose barometer is also on show.

Quiz night is Tuesday.
