It's time to put down the technology and get into books for Cityread's month-long literature festival. These guys are on a mission to get London reading with a city-wide read-a-long. If that doesn't tempt you, perhaps gin tastings and writing workshops will?

From 31 March until 30 April, Cityread wants the whole of London to engage with the same book. This year, the festival revolves around historical novel Prophecy by S. J. Parris. It's set in the London of 1583, so the excellent events programme has a historical Elizabethan twist.

Nab a free book at the Golden Hinde before you experience an immersive site-specific theatre performance at the Charterhouse. If you check out the historic book-handling workshops, you'll get a peek inside the fantastic Library of John Dee at the Royal College of Physicians.

The gin tasting workshop offers a slice of Elizabethan London. If you're after a more dressed-up affair, book into the Cityread supperclub, a fine dining experience with Prophecy author, S.J Parris.

Although the gin may suggest otherwise, Cityread is for all ages — make sure you check out Tudor Tales and Treats at the Charterhouse for family fun. After an Elizabethan history talk, and all that newly gained knowledge, you might even like to try your hand at the Golden Hinde quiz night.

Inspired to pick up a book? Let Cityread transport you to bygone London and get involved in the Prophecy inspired events — take a look at the full programme here.
