A Swimming Pool In The Sky: London To Get World's First

It's not unusual for a posh block of apartments to have its own swimming pool. What is unusual is to suspend the bastard 10 storeys above the ground, where all us plebs can gaze up with slack-jawed envy.

The Embassy Gardens development in Nine Elms is set to get just such a chlorinated bauble, according to a report in the Standard's Homes & Property supplement. The 25-metre pool will span the gap between two apartment blocks. It is for the use only of residents.

Embassy Gardens is one of numerous residential developments currently under construction in the Nine Elms to Battersea area. The complex of 2,000 homes is named for its neighbour, the new US Embassy (that's the Borg cube in the image above). Apartments go on sale in September, from £602,000.

Any affordable housing? Well, around 300 apartments are billed as intermediate or 'affordable' (see here for a rant about that term). Developer Ballymore has agreed to give more affordable housing cash to Wandsworth Council if the scheme increases in value during the build period. It will also pump Section 106 money into local transport, such as the Northern Line extension and the cycle hire scheme.
