A friendly movement that got New Cross talking last year is reaching out to all of London this year with Talk To Me Day.

This Saturday you are invited to change your London habit of avoiding eye contact and try to break the ice with someone new. It could start with a cheery hello at a stranger in the street, or a thank you to the bus driver. Try a bit harder and you may find yourself making friends at the bus stop or discussing Boris's Mayorship in the queue for the Post Office.

The campaign urges us to drop our inhibitions, put away snap judgements and discover how easy it is to start conversations with people and see what a difference it could make to you, your local neighbourhood and London itself.

For those up for a structured opportunity to talk to new folks, there's a programme of events. Try the picnic in Green Park (weather permitting), the Talking to Strangers panel debate or a 'Talk Social' in Dalston, Old Street or Camden. If you prefer to keep it local, there's a tool-kit to help you put on your own event and get your community talking.

The important thing is to say hello, then see where it goes.

Share your success stories, stumbles and surprises: @talktomelondon, Facebook and Instagram.

Talk To Me Day is on Saturday 30 August. Visit talktome.org for more information.
