What Are Those Buttons On The DLR For?

So you’re on the morning commute, packed standing at a disagreeable angle in a stopped DLR train on the inclined bit of track that bears Bank bound services down into the Square Mile’s subterranean parts, when your eyes alight on the boxy control panel situated beside the door. Buttons, lamps, odd-shaped knobs. What do they all mean? Here’s our best guess:

RTD - Ready To Drive. The doors are all closed and the train can proceed.

ADC – All Doors Closed. Alerts the Passenger Service Agent (PSA) that, er, all the doors on the train are closed.

I – we’re not too sure exactly what it stands for, but it’s an emergency light (‘immergency?’).

Next is the key fob, which allows the PSA to operate the following buttons…

ROD – Re-open Other Doors (any similarity to Private Rod is purely coincidental).

CTD – Close This Door.

COD – Close Other Doors.

PA  - Public Announcement (don’t call it a Tannoy)

Obviously, this is a supremely boring list of acronyms, and we’re sure you can come up with better ideas in the comments; for inspiration, here’s an attempt to turn them into a poem.

    I is for Inhibit; I light on means movement has been inhibited (loss of signalling or signal violation, roll back detection, or key manually switched to I by train captain).

    I always guessed RTD as Ready To Depart, but ‘drive’ fits in with the time-honoured DLR tradition of sitting in the front seat and pretending to drive, of course. Maybe the outer cover of the driver’s console should have a big fake button for passengers to excitably press, labelled PTD (Pretend To Drive).

      FYI: DLR Drivers don’t pretend to drive and if you ever sit at the front and are asked to vacate your seats they will tell you they need to OPERATE from the front of the train and this is usually due to safety reasons. When there is a fault on the systems/train I.e. signal failures and the train captain needs to intervene manually…this is when you see them shunting the train.

    RTD is Ready To Depart. It doesn’t mean the doors are closed, it’s just a signal to the PSA that they should carry out the door procedure if they have not already done so. Regular passengers assume it is a warning to them. As I’ve heard a PSA tell someone “The falling chime is a signal for me, not you”.
