TfL Unveils Tube Map Of Olympic Heroes

Transport for London has put together a special version of the Tube/DLR/Overground map in which each station name is replaced by that of a famous Olympian. Our commute this morning, then, takes us from David Robinson (Chalk Farm) to Roger Federer (Old Street) along the Basketball & Tennis (Northern) line.

Other swapsies include Daley Thompson for Baker Street, Florence Griffith-Joyner for Embankment and Serena and Venus Williams propping up the map as South Wimbledon and Morden, respectively.

The map’s annotation is quite inventive. Sporty types who have appeared in films — such as Michael Jordan (Euston) and George Forman (Abbey Road) — are marked with a clapperboard. Winners of five or more gold medals get a stellar cluster about their name, including Steve Redgrave (Knightsbridge).

Spare a thought for Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa, who suffers the ignominy of standing in for Mudchute. And, in case you’re wondering, Danish yachtsman Paul Elvstrom represents Cockfosters.

Plenty of unusual alternatives to the Tube map have been created over the years, but this is the first full-on effort from TfL itself. The designers are Alex Trickett and David Brooks.

You can buy a copy of the map from the TfL shop for £4.99.
