Things To Do In London On The Cheap: 1-8 January


New Year's Day: The New Year's Day Parade starts around midday on Piccadilly by the Ritz and processes to Parliament Street. The theme of the parade is the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee (watch or follow for free!)

Walk the Capital Ring from East Finchley to Harrow with the Ramblers - part of the Festival of Winter Walks - 10.30am start (free).

Join (or watch) the Strictly Winter Ballroom dancing at the Royal Festival Hall from 3pm (free).

Monday: Listen to the Shanghai Syncopated Orchestra do 20s and 30s music in the Clore Ballroom from 1pm (free).

Tuesday: Still off work? Pop down to Guildhall Art Gallery and admire the amphitheatre and Grimshaw's Moonlit London exhibition before it closes (free to enter Guildhall, £5 for the exhibition).

Wednesday: Find fellow fiends for board games at Wednesday Night Gaming with London On Board, downstairs at the Red Herring, Gresham Street EC2 (free).

Thursday: Art Saves Lives goes to the movies in Muswell Hill at Sable D'or Gallery between 3-4pm (free).

Kino London hosts an open-mic screening at Vibe Bar, Brick Lane from 7.30pm, and they'll be setting challenges for new films for the Short Film Festival (£4).

Friday: Say farewell to Christmas with the traditional burning of the holly and the ivy, singing and stories in the garden of the Geffrye Museum between 4-5pm (free).

Saturday: Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair sale is at Spitalfields between 11am-5pm (free to look around - bargains to be had!)

There's a free talk by curator Pablo León de la Barra in the Sackler Centre for Arts Education at the Serpentine Gallery from 3pm (free).

Sunday: Celebrate Twelfth Night with the Lions Part and meet the Holly Man, the Green Man, the Bankside Mummers, King Bean and Queen Pea and Fowlers Molly Dancers from 12.45pm on Bankside (free).
