New Moomin Shop Opens in Covent Garden

Moomins – those cartoon characters that looked like hippos, but were actually a breed of Nordic eco-warrior trolls – are coming to Covent Garden.

A new shop, dedicated to the 1950s characters, opens in the Market Building today, just in time for Christmas.

The shop is a collaboration between Sophia Jansson, a niece of Tove Jansson the Moomins’ creator, and Patrick Haddad, owner of an Edinburgh furniture shop, DesignShop UK. Haddad decided to open a London shop, the first outside the Moomin’s native Finland, following a successful exhibition in his Scottish store during the Edinburgh Festival called “And the World went Mad for Moomins.”

Pop in to the Covent Garden store, and you’ll find Moomin toys, books and stationery, as well as housey stuff, accessories and clothing. We love the fact the merchandise is displayed in little blue Moomin houses in store. There’ll also be a range of limited edition items for big Moomin fans, including rare memorabilia and prints of Tove Jasson’s original sketches.

The Moomin Shop opens in the Covent Garden Market Building today. The store will be open from 10am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.
