TfL are once again opening up the abandoned Aldwych Tube station for visits this weekend (tickets long sold-out). From this account, it sounds like the health and safety precautions are over-the-top to the point of parody. It wasn’t always thus. This video footage from Fred Ivey shows the station in the early 1990s, when still operational. Watch about 40 seconds in as the station attendant casually drops down onto the tracks and clambers all over one of the rails. Fred has a vast archive of London transport clips, so be sure to explore his site.
