London To Host 2017 World Athletics Championships

It's official — London has been announced as the winner of the race to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships, beating off competition from Doha. It is the first time the Championships will be held in the UK, and is the first event to be confirmed for the Olympic stadium post-2012. That ever-promised athletics legacy just took a major step forwards.

London has previously bid for the championships in 2001 and 2005, with derisory results; indeed, the capital actually won the 2005 bid, but was forced to abandon it after a proposed new athletics stadium in Edmonton was scrapped.

The result, announced just now in Monaco, could be seen as vindication for last month's decision to hit the reset button on the Olympic Stadium bid, after fears that the legal wranglings could jeopardise the bid.

This good news calls for a drink. Fortunately, those thirsty souls at the Visit London blog have put together a list of suitably-named pubs where you can celebrate London's WAC success.
