Okay. We get it. Low barriers of entry, simply and tasty ingredients, low cost and a quick serve assembly line approach mean burrito joints are springing up all over town. London’s latest is Poncho 8 on Old Compton Street in Soho. They’ve been around a couple years already with locations at Spitalfields and St Paul’s. We were at the Soho launch last night and can’t really complain too much about their offering but we’re pretty sure bigger and tastier burritos and Mexican food can be found nearby for around the same price.
D&D London restaurant group has announced plans to re-develop the ground floor and basement of the Old Bengal Warehouse on New Street off Bishopsgate in the City. The warehouse, originally built in 1771 by the East India Company to store spices from the Far East, forms part of the Devonshire Square Estate, which has recently completed the re-development of its Western and Central Courtyards. The 10,000 sq ft development will include two restaurants, bars and a specialist wine shop. One of the restaurants is to be a steak/chop house and the other a fish restaurant. Both venues will have outdoor seating within the building’s walled courtyards. The wine shop will specialise in wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy and be available for wine tastings as well as private dinners.
Eco eatery, Acorn House, has moved from King’s Cross to Shoreditch; 10 Orsman Road N1 5QJ to be exact. With a terrace on Regent’s Canal, solar panels on the roof, renewable electricity in the kitchen, the restaurant will stay true to its principles of ethical sourcing and seasonality. They’re keeping the same head chef (and that’s a good thing), much of the same staff and are still owned by the same charity, Shoreditch Trust. Drop by this weekend when you visit Shoreditch Festival.
London based start up Great British Chefs launching new iPhone and iPad app today. Aimed at “lovers of good food”, the GBC folk hope the app “will be a great way for London foodies to discover new recipes by Michelin starred chefs”. Bringing together 12 chefs (including Tom Aikens, Nuno Mendes, Marcus Wareing and Pascal Aussignac) with 15 Michelin stars between them, the app connects you with the world of professional, Michelin starred cooking with 180 never-seen-before recipes.
