A scrapyard fire in east London yesterday closed the DLR between Canning Town and West Silvertown at the start of the evening rush hour. 40 people were evacuated from the area and the fire brigade set up a hazard zone of 200 metres to contain gas cylinder explosions.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control by midnight but it was another addition to the woes of public transport yesterday. During the morning rush hour, passengers were stuck on a broken down train outside Liverpool Street for nearly an hour.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
