Look over the railings on the downstream pedestrian crossing of Hungerford Bridge and you’ll see evidence of a fascinating London subculture. One of the piers contains tens of broken skateboards. This is a skateboard graveyard, where old decks are hurled once their backs are broken.
Chris Sampson sends us this shot of the graveyard, which lies close to the well-known skating undercroft beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Like any graveyard, the ‘internments’ have their own memorials, all be it virtual ones. This website keeps track of the ‘plots’ and invites the bereaved boarders to leave an obiturary.
We hear there are other such resting places across the city. We’d love to hear about them in the comments.
