To coincide with the recently opened National Gallery exhibition of works by Northern Renaissance artist Jan Gossaert, the Gallery’s National Cafe has introduced a menu of gastronomic delights from Flanders to celebrate the artist’s Flemish roots. Priced at £23.50 for two courses or £27 for three courses – and available until 30 May – the menu includes starters such as potato and buttermilk cream with poached egg and dried cured Flemish ham, mains such as braised pork belly Hutsepot (pictured) and desserts along the lines of chocolate moelleux and brown beer ice cream. A special Belgian beer menu, including Brugse Zot Blond, Vedett and Boon Framboise, accompanies the dishes with matching suggestions for each course.
Londonist had a sample of the menu last night at the press preview – all good! In particular, we absolutely adored veal sweetbread croquettes with sauce tartare and crisp shallots. A collaboration of National Cafe’s head chef Simon Duff and noted Belgian chef Matthieu Beudaert, the menu offers a flavoursome treat whether you’re looking to augment your Gossaert viewing experience or simply keen for a proper meal.
