London Street Art Guide: 7. Fox Graffiti

Time for an urban fox hunt with a difference.

It’s not exactly high art, but these vulpine stencils are making quite an impact in North-West London. Sightings of the fox stencil range from Portobello Road to Camden Town and everywhere inbetween.

We’ve started a map, based on images in the Londonist Flickr pool and a dedicated group for sightings of the two-dimensional canid. We know some are missing. For example, we’ve seen photos of a couple near Portobello Road, but no exact location is given. So if you do know of others, please say below.

They go further east than Camden – there is one on Albion Road in Newington Green.

That’s a long road…can you remember where, so I can add it to the map?

      • http://twitter.com/topcatkeen tim keen

Its around 60 Albion Road. There is also 2 more of them I’ve noticed: 1 on Clonbrock Road (on the white wall where the road curves – nr number 28 according to Google), another on Wordsworth road (will come back with precise location but was near junction with Belgrade Rd).

This morning, I also noticed a Squirrel version has appeared on the Essex Road – looks great. Will confirm exact location but I think it was near the junction with Greenman Street

There’s also one on Inglewood Rd, close to the junction with West Ed lane.

  • John

two near St John’s Wood Tube, one on a wall on the east side of Finchley Road outside the Tube, and one on the back side of the phone box down Grove End Road

Wow, thanks everyone. This is one wide-ranging fox. I’ll add the new points to the map in a bit.
Note, if you’re leaving a new addition, please try and be as specific as possible (e.g. give the junction/end of the road).

There’s on the bottom of a pink shop on Pembridge Road up by Notting Hill (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stephaniesadler/5363349150/), one that was unfortunately buffed away already on Portobello Road right by the Bureau de Change (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stephaniesadler/5359226201/) and one under the bridge by Ladbroke Grove (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stephaniesadler/5362731723/). Any idea who the artist is yet?

  • red yarn

on the wall of the odeon swiss cottage white on blue. and one just before the corner of brondesbury road and kilburn high road blue on red on a doorway. did see one on the abbey road crossing but guess it’s been buffed

  • Mhayworth

Great to see a generation of people emmerging who respect foxes rather than villify them in order to justify the hunt. Hope this one takes off everywhere.

I saw one on a tube carriage this time last year. Also Notting Hill in January, Swiss Cottage Station last week and Westbourne Park today.

The Finchley Road speed camera one that Joe M mentions is a definite – it’s black on a yellow camera facing north just as the road bends towards Swiss Cottage. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59881253@N04/5471855856). Also on one Abercorn Place, on a phone box close to the crossing with Hamilton Terrace, on the left side as you walk towards St John’s Wood. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59881253@N04/5471238747). Finally, I think the one on the Odeon in Swiss Cottage has now been buffed (unless it’s the one Elou75 mentions), and the one on Maida Vale has been semi-buffed, so it now looks very faded.

  • Hanadi

Why are people rubbing them off, they are bloody great!

  • Hanadi

Plus i saved your pink fox pic above and am using it as my facebook profile pic, i really hope thats ok… i should most prob just go to the newsagents and take a pic of it myself as i only live down the blooming road from it! :)

  • Hanadi

Actually i just took the pic down as I am worried about copywrite issues, i will go take it myself!

  • Smith

    Clanricarde Gardens has one.

  • Richard

There’s one on the Waterstones by Notting Hill Gate tube station – not sure if it’s new or not spotted, as I don’t get down there often!

In West Hampstead, only the Thameslink one remains – the Tesco and Inglewood ones are gone, I believe.  The Thameslink one is also much nearer West End Lane than on the map – literally about five metres from WEL.

Ok the Inglewood one is still there sorry, but the Thameslink one has been buffed in the last week. So only one left in West H as far as I know!

  • singincrayon

Have you seen the edits? E.g. a chicken has been added at Notting Hill Waterstones

    • Richard Mellor

Just that one, or others?  I hadn’t seen that.  But I did what might be a new one on Abbey Road, right by the famous Zebra crossing… I wonder if the Foxman/woman is still prowling around?
