Trotting into Exchange Place near Liverpool Street is The White Horse. A lighter, airier (and by no means “old man”) pub with a bit of rustic style, it’s a pleasant place to sip a pint … or to grab a bite.

Londonist swung by for an early brekkie (available from 7.30am) and very much enjoyed our plate of field mushrooms and poached egg on toast (£5.50). Non-morning menu items include fancified offerings such as cured ham with celeriac remoulade, salt beef and horse radish dumplings, braised oxtail with mashed potato and tarragon gravy and more. Coffee was plenty fine as well, but as this is a pub review, we’re happy to mention there’s a commendable and varied range of keg beers such as Sierra Nevada, Schremser, Stiegl, Meantime and Brooklyn Lager.

A spacious terrace, comfy seating (workbenches, sofas and reclaimed furniture) and friendly service stand out in the memory of our invited visit, and we’d be amenable to re-visiting.

The White Horse is located at 2 Exchange Place, Appold Street, EC2M 2QS. Visit www.geronimo-inns.co.uk/thewhitehorse for details.

No real beer, then? That’s a pity.

Keg beers might not be ideal, but the range mentioned is pretty good nonetheless. Better than your standard pub kegs, by quite a way.

Yeah, I’m with Dave. Maybe not ideal but a good range. And, in a decent setting.

I think there were 4 real ales on – I seem to recall Doom Bar, London Pride, and a couple of slightly more interesting things which I was apparently enjoying too much to remember.

I was there last Friday – the place is still heaving with city types during the early evening, but the refurb makes it look like it’d be a much more pleasant place to be when it’s not rammed. They were coming round with platters of chipolatas and fish fingers too to tempt folk to have some food too.
