The City’s future skyline; the Walkie-Talkie tower is to the left

Work to build 20 Fenchurch Street, whose bulbous form has earned it the name Walkie-Talkie tower, should begin very shortly after a joint deal to finance the £500 million building was signed by Land Securities and Canary Wharf Group.

The 37-storey building will rise to 160 metres, putting it at roughly the same height as the Broadgate tower, but a little shorter than the Gherkin. It will have a publicly accessible “sky garden” on the top three floors, and is scheduled for completion in 2014.

Drawn by a cartoon pencil? Roof gardens sounds like a great idea though…seems an odd time for the skyline of the City to be transformed with Osborne’s 50 foot scissors cutting the public sector to pieces…but I guess these things can work out like that.
