London's Best Chips: Golden Fish Restaurant

It's an "& chips" kind of menu at Golden Fish Restaurant, located round the corner from Exmouth Market: two Spam fritters and chips (£3), jumbo saveloy and chips (£2.80) etc. On our recent visit, we went for a more than ample serving of haddock … and chips (£5.50), very much enjoying our meal and the sombre decades past ambiance of this chippiest of chippy joints.

More rectangular, less crispy and thinner than other chips we've reviewed, the deep fried chunks o' spuds here are indeed tasty and seem to be optimally cut for absorbing lots and lots of vinnie. A takeaway order sets ya back £1.20 and more than fits the bill for necessary snackage. Our flaky (and, yes, quite golden) haddock was yum as well. Service is of the old school slow variety but friendly and appreciative.

If you like your wood grain of the Formica variety and a softly bubbling vat and the gurgle of a turned up bottle of malt vinegar sound like the right aural conditions for transcendental munching, this is a local favourite well worth considering. Takeaway entrance to the south, dine in to the north with exceptionally retro seating and non-decor minus any lick of irony.

Golden Fish Restaurant is located at 102 Farringdon Road, EC1R 3EA.
