We liked the idea last year and were pleased to see the National Theatre is bringing it back again this summer. Picnic & Play at The Deck gives theatregoers a chance to spread out on the albeit artificial lawn and lounge above the Thames with drinks and a meal on the third floor terrace of the theatre. And if the weather's halfway decent, such a riparian pre-show cannot be beat.
Whereas '09's picnic was a champagne affair, this year sees Pimms and lemonade taking centre stage. The Deck's Picnic & Play costs £55 (which includes price for the ticket). In addition to the Pimms, picnic boxes come stuffed with yummies such as potted ham and home made piccalilli; a Scotch egg; smoked salmon and fennel salad with dill and chardonnay dressing; a salad of asparagus, broad bean, summer squash and goat’s cheese; Westcombe cheddar with pecan and raisin bread and homemade chutney; and a summer berry trifle.
