In Pictures: Deserted London

Acres of empty pavement, miles of open road; even China Town was empty. London on the morning of Christmas day seemed only inhabited by pigeons and a few stray tourists wondering if nuclear warfare had finally been unleashed unto the world or if they had simply wandered by mistake on the set of yet another sequel of 28 Days.

It felt slightly eerie and unsettling to see our normally bustling city so forlorn. Still there were a few intrepid cafés opened here and there where one could find a little human warmth. By midday though, things were starting to take on a more familiar face despite the absence of public transport.

Inspired by last year’s images, we’ve gone and shot a few more. The weather had clearly not improved!

    wow that is quite amazing and does remind me of the 28 Days Later setting, always wondered if there was one time where London is deserted!

    Last year I saw those pictures and was determined to go out and add to them this Christmas. Alas, I ended up in oz.

    These pictures seem pretty selective… I was driving through the city on the day and in certain parts — Euston Road, say — with the exception of public transport there wasn’t much less traffic than on an average Friday afternoon. Quite a few people out and about, too.

    Dean, I think it depends of several things: the time of day and the part of town you were in.

    There were people and cars about (as acknowledged in the copy) and I sometimes had to wait until the field cleared to take the shot, indeed for some of the pics there are people just off the frame. But the level of traffic was still much lower than at any other time.

    I don’t think it would be possible any similar pics during day time on another day.
