What's for Lunch? Luardo's

Londonist asks that most pressing of daily concerns: where to go on your lunch break.

Luardo’s
Whitecross St EC1Y
Map
Expect to Pay: around £5
Rating: 7 out of 10

Strolling along Whitecross Street a few weeks ago, we happened upon a little lime green van with a chalkboard menu listing fajitas, burritos, and quesadillas for sale. Unfortunately, Simon, the bloke inside the van, was done slinging burritos for the day and wouldn’t be back for another week at which time we eagerly returned for a delish and filling chorizo burrito with hot sauce for only £5. As mentioned by Dos Hermanos back in early June, Luardo’s is a very “welcome new addition” to this street where City workers and Old St hipsters almost collide. Indeed, we very much look forward to sampling more of Luardo’s Tex-Mex items soon.

It’s easy enough to recommend Luardo’s for lunch, but we wouldn’t suggest making a special journey. From what we gathered, there’s the off chance that Simon and his van could be away feeding hungry attendees at festivals during the summer months. However, if you find yourself around Whitecross St at lunchtime during the week, definitely have a peek to see if the van is there. Your taste buds will be glad you did.

I work near Old Street and just had Luardo's pulled pork burrito. It was tasty but they skimp on the filling a bit. To me it is worth the extra 50p and bus fare to go to Daddy Donkey's on Leather Lane. There's another burrito joint (Mucho Mas) opening up on Upper Street soon.

I am moving back to Texas after 4 years years here and London starts getting some tasty Mexican food. Bummer.

I too had a burrito, very filling, a little too much rice + too little chicken for my liking.

If you make the journey go on a day when the food market is open, if the burrito wagon isn't there you can find many other tasty lunches. It's a bit like a fast food borough market wih organic sausage stalls and the like selling cooked as well as raw food. Yum!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to say a big thanks for your comments... being a fairly new outfit I really welcome any kind of feedback and constructive criticism is always the most useful kind.

I'm not going to be back at Whitecross until Wednesday 15th August as the Mexivan's on festival duty until then. It's a shame as I would have loved you to come down and see that I've taken on board what you're both saying. Hopefully we'll see you in a couple of weeks.

Chris, thanks for the article. Nice photo by the way!

Hey cool. Thanks for writing, Simon. Hopefully, I can make it over that way when you get back on the 15th. Keep on making those yummies!
