What a charmer the Sergeant is. We plonked ourselves down on the cosy seats next to a roaring fire and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The surroundings are tastefully bizarre with oddments such as a chrome stag's head and a mish-mash of tiny picture frames. The clientele was truly mixed on our visit — elderly locals, mud-spattered workmen, a loved-up couple, a table of suits. The community spirit is exemplified in the adverts for the 'first annual Old Sergeant walk' (Hampton Court to Putney), raising money for local charities.
Five beers on draught include Twickenham, Grandstand, Naked Lady and Sambrooks, and they've got some interesting bottles, including Rocky Head, brewed round the corner on Kimber Road. We didn't get to try the food, but we hear there's a cracking pizza night on Sundays, and regular roasts of exotic meat...including python.
The John Young room upstairs can be booked without charge. And there's a decent sized beer garden round the back, containing an unexpected dart board.
