The Roebuck

The Roebuck

This pub has been voted by our readers as one of the best in Richmond. See the full list of winners here.

Almost unquestionably, the Roebuck has the best view of any pub in London. Situated near the top of Richmond Hill, the Thames vista is straight out of a Constable painting. You can even see Windsor Castle on a clear day.

We're cheating a bit, here. This Taylor Walker pub has no attached beer garden, but drinkers are allowed to cross the road and sit on the public benches in the kind of informal arrangement you don't find often in rule-heavy London. If we were making a list of '100 London experiences to try before you die', a slow pint on Richmond Hill would be in there.

The pub itself is a cosy, relaxing place with mixed woods and narrow corners. It dates back to Georgian times, but is on the site of an earlier pub from Shakespeare's time. The pub's website lists Mick Jagger, David Attenborough and Fearne Cotton as occasional patrons. They, and you, can choose among four or five real ales, plus the usual mix of lagers and ciders. Food is unfussy pub classics.
