This lively pub just off the high street is everything you'd want in a local: friendly, jolly, plenty of live events and sports screenings, late openings at weekend... it's a cracker.

Join the locals round the horseshoe-shaped bar, or head to the spacious back room where you'll find a comfortable dining area beneath a giant sunroof thingy. The lucky few can gain a seat in the separate snug area. Oh, and there's a handsome function room upstairs.

Drinks-wise, it's a fairly standard choice of casks (Doom Bar, Greene King...) and kegs like Neck Oil. The kitchen, meanwhile, puts out an impressive range of dishes, with plenty of good options for veggies.

Oh, and while they do, of course, take cards this is the closest pub to the world's first cashpoint... so consider paying the old-fashioned way.
