The V&A has unveiled plans for its new museum and research centre in Stratford. The two spaces are to be connected, the museum sitting on Stratford Waterfront and the research centre at Here East. Both are targeting an opening date of 2023.

The images of each are a little bit stunning — the new museum looks impressively angular, and inside promises a 360 degree view of the V&A. The research centre aims to reinvent the idea of a museum store, where visitors will be invited on a behind the scenes journey to explain how and why items are collected.

The V&A is just part of the new cultural sector at Stratford — both London College of Fashion and Sadler's Wells also plan to open sites here.

This new V&A also plans a partnership with the Smithsonian — the largest museum and research complex in the world — which will present one in four exhibitions at the museum.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said:

As London's centre of gravity extends east, our plans for East Bank make sure that high-quality culture and education are right at the heart of the development and of our Olympic legacy.

I'm truly delighted that the V&A — and its partnership with the Smithsonian Institution — is one of the world-renowned organisations working alongside us to drive forward growth and inspire more young Londoners to take up creative careers.

By bringing large parts of its vast programme to two new sites at East Bank, the V&A will open up access to the world's greatest collection of art, design and performance.
