East London's Getting A New Lido

A new lido for east London gets a step closer, as planning permission is granted.

As we reported in September 2023, Valentines Park in Ilford is the chosen location for the first new lido to open in London in decades, close to the spot where another outdoor swimming pool sat until 1995. Redbridge Council have now approved the proposals, meaning construction can begin later this year.

The new lido includes a 25-metre pool, children's splash area, changing rooms, a gym, dance studio, cafe, meeting room, picnic area and car park. Sustainability is a focus, with plans to use solar panels for energy generation, air-source heat pumps, water recycling systems, and energy-efficient lighting.

Here's what it could look like:

Mark Baigent, Corporate Director of Regeneration and Culture, said:

We're delighted we can now move forward with plans to deliver the first new Lido in London for decades.

The old Lido in Valentines Park holds a special place in the hearts of local people. It is where families enjoyed idyllic summer days right on their doorsteps and it is so exciting that after nearly 30 years, a brand new lido and more will be introduced in the park for people to visit and create new special memories.

The lido is expected to open by autumn 2025. In the meantime, make do with London's other outdoor pools, lidos and swimming ponds.
