Beloved budget homeware store IKEA is opening a new branch in Hammersmith.

Before you go measuring up for a new Billy Bookcase, we should point out that it's being described as a 'small format IKEA store', designed to fit in with people's high street shopping habits. Forks? Probably. Furniture? Maybe not — at least not in store, although the whole range will be available to order for home delivery.

The new branch will open inside the existing Kings Mall Shopping Centre, which will undergo a refurbishment after being acquired by Ingka Centres. That brand is a spin-off of IKEA, creating what it describes as "IKEA anchored meeting places". So does that mean a whole IKEA branded shopping centre? Perhaps, but on the plus side we're promised a Swedish dining space somewhere in the mix, where meatball lovers can get their fix.

Peter Jelkeby, Country Retail Manager and Chief Sustainability Officer at IKEA UK & Ireland said:

People have been eager to see our affordable range and access our life at home expertise on the high-street for some time, so we’re excited to introduce a unique IKEA store to the vibrant local community in Hammersmith and London.

The Hammersmith store follows the successful launch of a Greenwich branch in 2019, and joins other London stores in Croydon, Edmonton and Wembley, and smaller stores in Tottenham Court Road and Bromley.

IKEA Hammersmith is due to open in spring 2021.
